The Problem is Human Nature, not Industrial Espionage.

Think about the many IT people who clip memory sticks onto their key rings, then leave them lying on desks, coffee shop tables, etc.

And what happens if a staff member downloads a sensitive document, and sometime later, a few music tracks. (70% do download music onto memory sticks). If the music tracks are passed onto a friend, the confidential data is passed on with it. Then of course, there is the employee who resigns or is dismissed and thinks that some of your data could be useful at the next job.

Not forgetting the wasted time and bandwidth spent uploading images or downloading music to devices that may not be compatible with your PCs. Unauthorized devices that connect to your network cause unnecessary support overheads.

A case in point...

Results from a recent audit performed by one of our technology partners present an alarming discovery of unauthorized downloads within a single company over a period of just 10 days:

39% of users connected a USB device
154 different types of devices were connected
1,805 files were transferred between the network and the devices
1093 images were transferred, most likely personal photos and other graphics that take up valuable server space.
28 system files that are potentially detrimental to the integrity of the server and pc's were downloaded
The people responsible for the network had no way of knowing this information was being transferred between the devices or what was connecting to their network.
