  Internet Monitoring

There are three main components to ObsurferPro™, the administrative console from where the results of the network scanning will be displayed and reports on this data executed, the network scanner which monitors the Internet traffic and the back-end database into which details of Internet access will be saved.

While it is possible that all three of these components will be physically located on the same PC, this may not always be the case and as such the hardware requirements will depend largely on which component is to be installed.

System

The Administrative console should be installed on to each PC from which ObsurferPro™ is to be configured or the results of the network scanner displayed. Hardware requirements are fairly minimal for this role.

Processor:  1.0Ghz
Memory:  512MB
Operating System:  Windows 2000 or higher
Network Card:  Any capable of promiscuous mode
Free Disk Space:  500MB (Program + Database)

The Network Scanner

The network scanner should be carefully placed (refer to the below section which describes the different types of networks and how best to locate the network scanner) as this is the single most important aspect which will determine the success of monitoring your network using ObsurferPro™. The following settings are just a guide however as the amount of network traffic in general will have a major effect on the work load imposed on the ObsurferPro™ network scanner and therefore the hardware requirements. The above settings are suggested for networks with 50 or less PCs generating an ‘average’ quantity of network traffic.

The Back-end Data Store

ObsurferPro™ may either connect to an existing instance of Microsoft SQL Server or may use an MSDE database. ObsurferPro™ has been tested against the following back end databases:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 7.0
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000
  • MSDE 2000

It is recommended that you install Microsoft SQL Server or MSDE prior to installing ObsurferPro™ to simplify the installation process.
